One minute with a photographer
Video series for the Institut Français: Raymond Depardon and Martin Parr exchange perspectives between France and the UK.
A video series built around the theme “France–United Kingdom: crossed perspectives”, in which a French photographer is invited to describe one of their photographs taken in the United Kingdom, and, conversely, a British photographer speaks about an image captured in France.
Raymond Depardon, a French photographer and member of Magnum Photos, is known for his humanist reportage and his documentary eye on contemporary societies. Martin Parr, a British photographer also with Magnum, is famous for his satirical, colourful images of everyday life.
The series explores how two major photographic nations perceive one another. By asking each artist to speak about an image made in the other country, the project reveals how an outside eye captures things that can be invisible to locals, while surfacing the mutual assumptions and fascinations between the two.
The series was produced for the Institut français, the agency of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture responsible for France’s cultural action abroad. The project is part of an ongoing dialogue and artistic exchange between France and the United Kingdom.
